Grade 10 Service

Highlight

This year, I have been doing service at an academy for two hours every Friday. I take attendance, contact students, and help organize student information. At first, I felt uncomfortable calling strangers to remind them of their classes, but I became more comfortable with my job after a while.

Reflection

This year I have done more than a hundred hours of service, most of which came from volunteering at Kerrisdale Academy. At the beginning of this year, I walked into this place when I heard it was looking for volunteers. I go there every Friday to work for two hours. At first, my only job was taking attendance and organizing student information. As I had more experience and became close with the faculty, some teachers asked me to help them prepare class materials. I enjoy working there, because I made friends with other volunteers and students, as well as learned a lot.

The trip to Guangxi was also a significant experience for me. After talking to those students who are my age, but with completely different lives, I learned to appreciate the opportunities I have. I will find more service opportunities, since I now realize the importance of doing service -- learning while making some difference in community.
