Highlight
This summer, I volunteered at the Project Hope office in Shanghai, which raises donations for students who can’t afford to go to school. I worked in the office for three day, collecting student information, and enclosing receipts for donations. I also read some thank-you letters from students, to select some good ones to publish. The letters from those students really moved me.
Reflection
The experience at the Project Hope high school in Guangxi, China last summer was really an unforgettable one, so I went back to China and visited the Project Hope office in Shanghai this summer.
The Project Hope office in Shanghai raises donations for students who can’t afford to go to school, and organizes activities for these students. Although most of the things I did were mundane office work, I learned a lot about fundraising from this experience. Reading the thank-you letters from students was also very special. I remember one letter from a child of a migrant worker, who had moved to Shanghai from a small town. He said he was bullied at his first school in Shanghai because he grew up in a small town. He used to love school, but he didn't want to go to school any more. School was also a huge expenditure to his family, so his parent thought about letting him drop out. He then received help fro the Hope Project, and transferred to a school for migrant children. Although I didn't know him personally, his story really moved me. I used to take the opportunities I have for granted, but these students made me appreciate them more.
This year, I’m also doing service at Kerrisdale Academy. I got more familiar with all the work since last year. I became more comfortable and confident when calling strangers.
The other thing I did was the spring fair canvas. This year I used one of the photos I took during the Christmas Break, which is a seabird standing on a boat with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.
